Octogonal iron nanban tsuba. Very unusual and rare piece. Not only because of its octagonal shape but also because of its large size and style. The Nanban style dates back to the first sailors who arrived in Japan in the 16th century. Mostly Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese. The nanban style is so called because it was brought by the nanban or barbarians, as the Europeans were known in Japan at that time. This exceptional tsuba is a rather rare object as although dragon motifs are common in the nanban style, the unusual shape and large size make it unique. A great piece for collectors. Muromachi period.
