JAPANESE IRON TSUBA WITH FIGURAL RELIEF AND GOLD INLAY

Edo period

Maru-gata iron tsuba with a deep, well-developed dark patina, executed in high relief and enriched with fine gold nunome-zōgan inlay. The guard displays a sculptural treatment of notable depth and careful modulation.

The obverse presents a lively figural scene of popular or literary character. The composition unfolds within a stylized landscape featuring rustic architecture, rock formations, and vegetation, all subtly highlighted with delicate gold overlay that accentuates contours and surface details.

The reverse continues the landscape motif with rocky terrain and what appears to be textile or travel equipment elements, maintaining strong narrative continuity between both sides. The iron carving is confident and well layered, creating effective spatial separation.

The nakago-ana is of standard form with a properly shaped kozuka hitsu-ana. The iron surface shows a consistent, mature patina fully in keeping with Edo period workmanship.

On stylistic and technical grounds—particularly the narrative subject matter, relief treatment, and restrained use of gold—the piece aligns convincingly with the decorative traditions associated with the Nara–Mito sphere of work produced for the cultivated samurai class during the Edo period.

Condition
Very good overall. Minor wear to the gold inlay is visible on high points, consistent with age and handling. The iron patina remains stable and well preserved.

Conclusion
A characterful and well-executed narrative tsuba representative of refined Edo-period decorative taste. An attractive piece suitable both for thematic collection and for mounting on a quality koshirae.
