This is a complete Japanese armor composite set from the late Edo – Meiji period, showcasing both effective battlefield protection and ceremonial elegance — a fusion of function, symbolism, and aesthetic precision.
Kabuto (Helmet):
Type: Suji bachi kabuto in nerikawa with 24 vertical riveted plates design.
Maedate: A large golden crescent moon, emblematic of spirituality, mystery, and divine influence.
Shikoro: Three-tiered neck protection with deep blue cords and vermilion edging.
Fukigaeshi: Prominent and curved, with subtle engraved motifs.
Tehen no kanamono: Classic circular fitting, minimalistic in design.
Facial Guard:
The throat is protected by a refined nodo-wa, decorated with red and black braiding and three family crests (mon): two round crosses and a golden leaf cluster.
Do (Cuirass):
Type: Tatehagi okegawa dō, horizontal lamellar cuirass.
Lacquer: Black, glossy and well-preserved.
Cordage: Brilliant red, combined with navy, green, white, and off-white cords forming a symmetric “V” pattern on both front and back.
Decorations: Intricate gilt fittings and mon (round cross and floral).
Sode (Shoulder Guards):
Type: Ō-sode, large scale, multisegmented.
Cord pattern: Consistent with the rest of the armor, reflecting high ceremonial value.
Kote (Armored Sleeves):
Lacquered iron segments sewn onto indigo fabric.
Chainmail (kusari) sections and reinforced hand guards.
Haidate and Suneate:
Haidate: Multisegment thigh protectors with decorative trimmings.
Suneate: Lower leg protectors with vertical plate arrangement.
