Japanese Tsuba with Carp Motif — Meiji Period
Maru-gata tsuba crafted in shakudō, the traditional Japanese copper alloy with a high gold content that develops the characteristic deep blue-black patina. The surface displays a finely executed and uniform nanako ground, indicative of careful workshop workmanship.
Rare and very collective motive. The composition features two carp (koi) in applied relief, rendered with notable naturalism:
A dominant gilt specimen with meticulously chiseled scales.
A smaller silver-plated companion balancing the design.
Both figures are gold- and silver-plated, with inlaid eyes, and are accompanied by delicately engraved aquatic stems in gold.
The gilt seppa-dai provides strong visual contrast against the dark ground, reinforcing the decorative character of the piece. The execution quality, volumetric modeling, and late naturalistic aesthetic place the work convincingly in the Meiji (early 20th century).
Technical Assessment
Fine and consistent nanako workmanship.
Well-integrated applied metal elements.
Late naturalistic style typical of Meiji metalwork.
Strong aesthetic presence and chromatic contrast.
Conclusion
This is a high-quality hand-crafted tsuba from the Meiji. Pieces of this type remain appreciated by collectors for their shakudō work and rich decorative appeal, particularly when — as here — preserved in very good condition and featuring the auspicious carp motif, a traditional symbol of perseverance and success in Japanese culture.
