Refined maru-gata tsuba executed in high relief, depicting a dynamic mounted samurai riding above stylized crashing waves. The composition reflects the well-known narrative tradition associated with the Sōten lineage, characterized by lively figural movement and rich surface contrast.
The plate is crafted in shakudō—the classic copper-gold alloy prized for its deep black patina—enhanced with extensive gold-plated applications and selective silver-toned details. The gilded rim provides an elegant visual frame that reinforces the luxurious aesthetic typical of high-quality kinko work.
The scene is rendered in pronounced takabori with effective depth and layering. The warrior’s armor, the horse’s anatomy, and the flowing wave forms are all articulated with confident chiseling, creating a vivid sense of motion across the surface. The use of iroe metal accents further enriches the visual hierarchy and is fully consistent with Edo period decorative sword fittings.
The tsuba is signed Sōten School on the seppa-dai, in keeping with the celebrated Hikone-bori tradition that flourished during the Edo period and became highly sought after among samurai patrons for its dramatic narrative style.
