Historical and Artistic Overview
This unsigned (mumei) katana very heavy blade was forged during the mid to late Edo period, a time marked by peace, martial refinement, and the increasing sophistication of sword aesthetics. The lack of signature may indicate either a deliberate omission by the smith, a private commission, or a shortening of the tang (suriage) during the blade’s history.
Despite its anonymity, the blade exhibits excellent balance and craftsmanship, with a length of 66.5 cm and a gentle 1.6 cm sori, offering agility and cutting efficiency. It is mounted in a complete koshirae of classical aesthetic: understated, balanced, and functional, reflecting the quiet dignity of samurai culture in the 18th century.
