Complete koshirae for long wakizashi – Edo period

This refined koshirae for a long wakizashi displays a coherent and visually striking mounting executed within classical Edo period standards. The ensemble balances martial sobriety with tasteful ornamentation, resulting in a mounting that is both functional and aesthetically compelling.

The saya is finished in a warm brown lacquer with a dense nashiji texture, producing a rich, deep surface under light. The kojiri termination is clean and well integrated. The muted green sageo provides an elegant, restrained contrast consistent with late samurai taste.

The tsuka is tightly wrapped in black tsuka-ito over well-grained samegawa, with regular diamonds and proper tension. Particularly notable are the oversized menuki featuring naturalistic insect motifs, rendered in pronounced relief and giving the mounting strong visual character.

The fuchi shows floral relief decoration with gilt highlights over a dark ground, executed in classic Edo taste. The junction between fuchi and tsuka is clean and harmonious with the menuki theme.

The tsuba is an iron plate of traditional rounded form with mature dark patina and a restrained, martial aesthetic. Its profile and finish align well with practical Edo mountings.

Two seppa and the habaki are present, completing a fully functional mounting ready for a blade. Overall ergonomics and proportions confirm a long wakizashi koshirae whose presence approaches that of a short katana.

Assessment

Well-preserved Edo koshirae with excellent thematic coherence and unusually large menuki that provide strong visual impact. A mounting fully suitable for a long, martial-oriented wakizashi blade.
