Japanese samurai armor, tōsei gusoku with gilt round maedate and gusoku-bitsu storage box
Narrative
A strongly composed tōsei gusoku ensemble from mid edo period defined by deep, dark urushi tones and an unusually elegant color rhythm: green lacing with orange accents and blue ties, crowned by a gilt round maedate that immediately anchors the helmet’s silhouette. This is an armor made to read at distance—clean surfaces, solid volumes, and a deliberate alternation of textures across lacquered iron, worked leather, and textile panels carrying dense kusari stitching.
The overall impression is refined yet forceful, balancing martial restraint with decorative intensity—most notably in the dō (with its striking gilt upper application) and in the repeating patterns across the lamellar/leather elements.
Detailed technical description
Kabuto
A zunari-bachi helmet in iron, lacquered in a dark chestnut tone with visible rivets and crisp construction lines. The fukigaeshi are lacquered and show a red inner edge contrast. The shikoro is finished with textured black lacquered leather and a repeating motif reinforced by green odoshi; the perimeter is edged with an orange accent line. The front is crowned by a gilt round maedate, visually immediate and distinctly heraldic in character.
Menpō
A hanpō (half mask) in dark lacquer, secured with ochre/orange cords. The form is restrained and functional, complementing the helmet’s profile without overloading the composition.
Dō
An okegawa-dō cuirass built from horizontal plates, lacquered in dark chestnut with regular rivet work and clearly visible functional fittings. The upper section features a gilt, crackled/repoussé-like surface (the appearance of worked leather finished in gold), combined with very compact green lacing and blue knots/ties. The construction reads as robust and purpose-built, while maintaining refined finishing details.
Sode
A pair of boldly proportioned sode with textured black surfaces (lacquered leather) and a repeating pattern reinforced by green lacing. The lower edge carries the same orange accent seen on the helmet’s shikoro, tying the full set together. The volume and drop are well balanced against the dō.
Kote
A pair of kote on a textile base with dense kusari (chainmail) stitching across broad sections. They include dark-lacquered forearm plates and hand guards (tekko), with blue ties. The transitions between textile, mail, and plate are neatly executed.
Haidate
Thigh protection with a compact upper curtain of hanging green cords and lower panels finished in textured black covering with a repeating, green-laced pattern, edged in orange. The effect is richly decorative while remaining distinctly martial in presence.
Suneate
A pair of shino-suneate with vertical splints and kusari sections. The upper portion is padded in a kikkō (hexagonal) pattern with orange knots/raised elements, and black fastening ties. Visually strong components, fully coherent with the set’s palette.
Condition
Overall preservation is very high: lacquer retains a strong sheen, lacing is tight and even, mail sits well on the textile support, and fittings show natural patina. Surface wear consistent with age and handling is visible on edges and contact areas, without compromising either the aesthetic read or structural integrity.
Storage box
A reddish wooden gusoku-bitsu with iron fittings and a front handle. Surface wear and marks are consistent with age, adding both presentation value and practical conservation utility.
