Historical narrative

This striking Edo period samurai armor evokes the martial prestige of feudal Japan. Dominated by a large golden mon on the chest, possibly a variant of the Mitsudomoe family crest, it reflects the status of a high-ranking samurai or retainer of a noble clan. The imposing kabuto, crowned with a three-pronged golden maedate emerging from a red heart-shaped base, symbolizes not only battle-readiness but personal identity and distinction.

The kabuto (suji bachi) is made from multiple lacquered iron plates and features a black glossy finish. The shikoro (neck protector) retains its original dark green braiding. While some of the helmet’s cords have aged, the internal stability has been preserved with subtle wire reinforcements, maintaining a solid and elegant presentation.

Technical analysis by component

Kabuto (helmet):
Suji bachi style with vertical riveted plates, black lacquered. The shikoro features green braiding with a few broken strips due the ages. Internal reinforcement wires help stabilize the structure discreetly.

Maedate:
A visually dominant crest composed of three gold-painted antler shapes and a red heart base. This distinctive crest emphasizes authority and individual character.

Dō (cuirass):
Horizontal-lame okegawa yokohagi-dō style, with deep brown lacquer and a large gold-painted clan crest. Scratches and marks on the surface lend it a battlefield authenticity.

Sode (shoulder guards):
Long and wide, featuring brown lacquered plates and indigo cord lacing.

Kote (sleeves):
Made of mail and lacquered iron plates with textile reinforcement and molded decorations on the forearms.

Haidate (thigh guards):
Composed of small golden squares on a textile base. Some cordage has broken due to age, subtly adding to the historical aura of the piece.

Suneate (shin guards):
In well-preserved condition with vertical lacquered bars and stable straps.

General condition:
This armor balances aesthetics, historical value, and authenticity. The lacquer, decorations, and clan crest are well preserved. Minor restorations and signs of age add to its charm. An ideal piece for collectors, museums, or serious historical displays.
