Museum-Quality Daishō Tsuba Set (One NBTHK Hozon Certificate)
An exceptionally refined matched daishō tsuba set of outstanding artistic and technical quality. These guards display masterful high-relief carving on a dense iron plate, richly accented with gold and silver-plated inlays and a finely finished gilt rim. The workmanship demonstrates the hand of a highly accomplished metal artist working in the Edo period aesthetic tradition, with sculptural depth and narrative dynamism rarely encountered.
The omote of the larger tsuba presents a powerful mythological composition featuring a fierce oni grappling with a tiger rendered in deep relief, the surfaces meticulously worked to create strong volume and movement. The use of warm-toned metal for the figure contrasts elegantly with the dark iron ground, while the gold elements provide controlled highlights rather than excessive ornamentation. The companion wakizashi guard continues the theme with equally sophisticated carving and matched decorative vocabulary, confirming the set was conceived as a unified daishō.
The ura of both pieces reveals refined nanako-style punch work and subtle landscape motifs executed with notable restraint, further supporting the high workshop level. The rims are finished with a continuous gilt fukurin that remains crisp and well preserved.
One of the tsuba retains its original NBTHK Hozon Tōsōgu certificate (Heisei 26, March), confirming its recognition by the foremost authority in Japanese sword fittings. Unfortunately, the certificate for the companion piece has been lost over time; however, the workmanship, materials, carving depth, and perfect stylistic concordance between both guards clearly indicate the same high-level origin and period.
Sets of this sculptural ambition and matched quality are increasingly difficult to source, particularly when one element is already papered. This daishō represents a compelling acquisition for the advanced collector seeking museum-level tosōgu with strong visual presence and certified provenance.
