Blade:This wakizashi features a well-proportioned and functional blade measuring 53.2 cm in length with a 1.1 cm curvature. The hamon is a gently undulating notare-midare, and the hada shows a visible itame pattern with mixed regions. The boshi curves to a traditional ko-maru. The nakago is unsigned (mumei) with one mekugi-ana and displays an aged, stable patina.
Habaki:Copper habaki with silver-reinforced file marks, tightly fitted and aesthetically refined.
Mounting (koshirae):The saya is lacquered in bright orange reddish and adorned with repeating black mon of the Sagara clan. This crest, known as “gosei rokkamon” (five-circle crest), is historically associated with the Sagara, a prominent clan from Higo Province who served under the Shimazu and governed the Hitoyoshi domain during the Edo period. The included kozuka is signed “Nensei saku” and decorated with birds in relief on a textured background with gold highlights. The tsuka has black cord wrap over white samegawa, with menuki depicting the 3 monkey tale. The fuchi-kashira are adorned with gold plants and birds on a dark base. The tsuba is forged iron with an openwork floral pattern.
Narrative and context:This wakizashi unites a functional, well-forged blade with an aesthetically rich and symbolically significant mounting. The presence of the Sagara clan mon connects the sword to the feudal elite of southern Japan, while the signature on the kozuka adds artisanal value. A highly collectible piece for its historical and artistic merit.
