ITEM:

Japan, complete tōsei gusoku armor, Edo period

A complete Japanese armor ensemble with a restrained, martial presence, defined by the contrast between glossy black lacquered plates, deep navy lacing, and gilded accents. A sculptural shishi (guardian lion) head crest provides a strong focal point on the kabuto, balanced by the richness of the visible sleeve textiles in blue with gold-patterned weave. Overall, this is a coherent gusoku with a distinctly “classic” visual language and strong display impact.

Technical description

Kabuto
Black-lacquered tōsei helmet with pronounced ribs and a shaped mabizashi, finished with reddish edging/details. The shikoro is built from multiple lames with dense dark-blue lacing and a lower trim in a golden/yellow tone. At the front, a three-dimensional shishi head crest (maedate) is mounted on a metal bracket.

Face protection
Half-mask of Hanpo type in a reddish-brown lacquer, fitted with a laminated yodare-kake and secured with a braided blue front tie.

Dō (cuirass)
Okegawa dō cuirass of horizontally lamed, black-lacquered plates with an even surface and deep gloss. The reverse shows closure hardware and a reinforcing plate, keeping the overall silhouette compact and functional.

Sode and kusazuri

  • Sode shoulder guards in lamed construction with dark-blue lacing and finished edges; the kusazuri skirt continues the same vocabulary with overlapping lames and regular tying.

Kote (arm defenses)
Arm defenses combining kusari mail with reddish-brown lacquered plates/splints, integrated over blue textile with gold decorative weave (brocade-like). A circular arm fitting with raised geometric decoration and three gilt-toned triangular bosses is visible.

Suneate (greaves)
Black-lacquered greaves secured by cords. The knee guards are particularly striking, featuring yellow panels with a cell/hexagon-like pattern, creating a strong contrast for display.

Storage box
Included is a Japanese storage box of yoroi bitsu type in black lacquer, with metal fittings and a pronounced, honest surface patina consistent with long-term storage.
