JAPANESE IRON TSUBA WITH FIGURAL RELIEF AND GOLD INLAY
Japanese iron tsuba with finely executed high-relief figural decoration and gold inlay accents, depicting a dynamic martial scene. The composition shows several armored warriors arranged within a rocky landscape beneath flowing forms suggestive of clouds or mountainous terrain, rendered with strong sculptural volume and convincing movement.
The surface displays a well-developed dark patina, with selective gilding highlighting helmets, armor elements, and background details, producing the refined visual contrast characteristic of quality Edo-period work. The iron plate shows clear hand-modeling with organic texture, particularly visible in the raised ground and compositional folds.
The nakago-ana is of standard form with well-integrated hitsu-ana. A vertically incised signature is present on the seppa-dai. The most plausible reading is Sōten saku (宗典作) together with a residence inscription (likely Hikone-jū), placing the piece within the Hikone Sōten school, renowned for narrative samurai tsuba with gold highlights.
Based on style, technique, and subject matter, the guard can be confidently attributed to the Edo period, within the decorative output of the Sōten tradition, highly regarded by collectors for its lively figural work and ornamental richness.
Condition: overall well preserved, with consistent patina and minor age-appropriate wear.
