Oval tsuba finely executed with a powerful high-relief wave (nami) design, signed Ōmori Hideshige (大森英房), a prominent master of the Ōmori school active during the mid Edo period. The composition displays the characteristic dynamism of the school, with deeply modeled water masses, vigorous crests, and dense texturing that creates a strong sense of continuous movement.
The seppa-dai is smoothly finished and bears a carefully chiseled vertical signature. The piece shows an attractive, even silvery-grey patina that enhances the sculptural quality of the metalwork. Based on its tone, non-magnetic behavior, and surface character, the tsuba is most likely made of high-silver-content shibuichi, although manufacture in solid silver cannot be completely excluded, both materials being documented within the Ōmori tradition for achieving bright aquatic effects.
The carving quality, compositional density, and naturalistic treatment of the waves are fully consistent with refined Ōmori school workmanship of the Edo period. An elegant and visually striking example of high-level Japanese sword fitting artistry.
