Beautiful Tanto attributed to Munechika in the Meiji period. Late 19th century. This blade is attributed to Sanjo Munechika in the Meiji period (1868-1912). Sanjo Munechika is a famous swordsman’s name, whose history dates back to the Heian period, some 1000 years ago. This Tanto was attributed to the last generation of Munechika with an NTHK certificate from the Japanese Sword Preservation Society.
The Tanto is of a high quality with an unusual shape and a vivid hamon. On the koshirae it is a real rarity with many elements like Fuchi kashira, kogatana, kojiri, etc. made of silver plated bronze. In addition the tsuka ito is made of a very precious and rare material, lacquered whale’s whiskers ( kujirahige). A daimyo or any high ranking samurai would use more noble materials such as silk, leather or the very exclusive whale hair, because this would be a reflection of his power and social position, caring little about durability since in case of deterioration it would not be a problem to replace it with a new one, something that could be done every three or four months.
On the other hand, a less wealthy samurai would look for cheap materials and hurry its use to the maximum and when it fell apart he would replace it (if he could) using these cheap materials such as cotton. His menukis are extensively worked in silver and shakudo with the symbolism of the family samurai clan. This piece is undoubtedly made for someone very wealthy of the time as it is evident that the materials as well as the workmanship are excellent which makes this piece an authentic piece worthy of the best museums without a doubt.
The blade is in old japanese polish remaining in good condition, the jihada of the steel is detailed and full of details to appreciate. A masterpiece Worthly a museum and a great addition to any private collection.
Blade is in very good condition due to aging. Not hagire and not fatal damage, of course. This is a japanese weapon so have a real historical value. This is a weapon with centuries, not machine crafted so can be minor movements of saya, tsuka, tsuba, etc. Because of dilatation, humidity, etc. and little damages propers of his age like small rust, scratches, etc.. Sold as is.
