Fantastic long sword Signed: 天保六年四月七日 於陸奥三春摺付敷腕切断. Exact meaning is unclear, something about shortening of the blade that took place in 1835 at Miharu in Mutsu Province in koshirae of the time. The sword has some polishing, but still has a kizu and some old surface rust. The rust is already black and has patina so it is unlikely to continue increasing, it is not a recent rust. Otherwise with a good polish the magnificent details of this sword would be much more appreciated because underneath it is a real jewel. This can be seen in the signature and the great cut work on the nakago. Swords used to be made shorter to suit the type of fighting of the time, in tight places where the sword could get stuck and be fatal to the samurai, the old swords of the muromachi and azuchi period were trimmed to give them a second life as most of them were passed down from generation to generation. This sword was sufficiently good that it was cheaper to cut it down and refit it than to buy a new one.
The koshirae is excellent, although simple, to the untrained eye it may look simple but it has many interesting details such as magnificent carved habaki, the fuchi kashira, signed, made of iron with a Buddhist symbol of protection, or the tsuba, probably the largest I have ever seen despite having held hundreds of swords, indicating that the owner preferred to have a large guard, which indicates that it was commonly used for fighting. The saya has a workmanship that can only be appreciated live, with patterns in the lacquer and an exquisite and very original triangular finish on one of the sides.
