Beautiful extra long katana of more than 76 centimeters long in koshirae of the late Edo period, bakumatsu period. This impressive sword is mounted on a Higo style koshirae of high quality iron of the same period, which retains its original mount judging by the single nakago ana (hole in the tang). Much of the gold inlay is preserved on the fuchi kashira as well as on the tsuba. The saya is also in excellent condition. As for the blade, you can see that it is in exceptional condition and has many details in the hamon and jihada that stand out in plain sight with much relevance of nie.
Bakumatsu (幕末 Late Tokugawa Shogunate) is the name given to the events that comprise the last years of the Edo period of Japanese history, when the Tokugawa shogunate was coming to an end. This stage is delimited by the great events that took place between 1853 and 1867, when Japan ended its isolation policy known as sakoku, and the transition from feudalism under the Shogun took place, beginning the Meiji period.
The major political-ideological divide during this period was between the ishin shishi, an incipient anti-Western nationalism that grew up among the Tozama-daimio (“external overlords”) and the Shogun government, including the elite Shinsengumi corps, which came about after the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry on Japanese shores.
Eventually, the Satsuma and Chōshū clans would revolt against the Tokugawa regime, which even with numerous forces, saw an increasing number of its former vassals join the rebellion.
The turning point of the Bakumatsu was the Boshin War and the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, when the Shogun’s forces were finally defeated by the Emperor’s supporters.
A very healthy blade with a superb polish on the blade, with only a few small details and superficial scratches that do not affect the quality and strength of the sword. You can clearly see the quality of the sword and the beautiful jihada and hamon produced by the tamahagane steel forging process that used different densities and folds to make Japanese swords, the best swords ever created.
