Nice Gendaito long sword signed “魚延 Uonobu” and dated “1945 February” with the seki stamp. The sword is preserved in a magnificent condition with a beautiful hamon that changes when changing the prespective and light, the sword is in a very good polished condition. It also has a beautiful koshirae with motifs of dragonflies (tombo) on the fuchi, kashira and menukis. Complete the koshirae a black lacquered saya in very good condition and an iron mokko tsuba. It probably belonged to a high rank officer and participated in the Second World War. Only high ranking officers had handmade swords during the Second World War, except for soldiers who wore old family swords, due to its high cost of manufacture and its long process. So this is a fantastic piece for both samurai art and WWII lovers.
Gendaito are traditionally made Japanese swords forged from swordsmiths working after the Meiji period. These swords were made using fully traditional methods and those swordsmiths who were approved to forge gendaito during WWII were designated Rikugen Jumei Tosho. While for many years Showa period blades were overlooked, a number of exhibitions such as the first showing of Yasukuni-to, demonstrated the high level of craftsmanship exhibited in these swords. Some are extraordinarily impressive examples modelled on classical works (koto utushimono of smiths such as the Bizen Nagamitsu and the Ichimonji school).
The sword was acquired at an auction for professionals in Tokyo and was probably sold by one of the heirs.
The blade is in old japanese polish remaining in good condition, the jihada of the steel is detailed and full of details to appreciate. A masterpiece Worthly a museum and a great addition to any private collection.
