About the Kabuto:
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century
Comes with certificate of supein Nihonto.
Beautiful and very rare unusual style kabuto (kawari) in the shape of a shell. A very special and very rare kabuto. These kabuto are usually in private collections and museums and rarely found, even more outside Japan which presents a great opportunity to get hold of a unique piece. These helmets were popular in the late muromachi period and early edo. Unlike other more common helmets, they tended to represent tastes or hobbies of the wearer or representations of his province or house. These helmets were reserved for important daimyos due to the high cost of making such a personalized piece. The helmet is made of lacquer and nerikawa to be able to be carried without too much weight that would complicate the movement and although some of the pieces have been repaired over the centuries the lacquer is practically intact in its beautiful original dark brown color. A piece worthy of the best museums and private collections, do not miss the opportunity to get your hands on such an exclusive piece.
